Curtiss Wright Controls Electronic Systems Introduces New Rugged VXS Multi-Channel Data Recorder with Solid State Drives
DAYTON, OH – March 24, 2010 -- Curtiss Wright Controls Electronic Systems, a business group of Curtiss-Wright Controls and a leading designer and manufacturer of dependable subsystems for the aerospace and defense market, has pioneered the new Vortex VR-6511S8, a 6U VXS (VITA 41) multi-channel data recorder with solid state drives.
Curtiss-Wright Controls' new recording engine board contains a Xilinx® FPGA and Power® Architecture processor, supporting up to eight SATA controllers that can be striped together and generate a durable, high-speed data recording system. It provides quick and simple integration of a sturdy COTS data recorder system by system designers into applications like sonar, radar, and image processing.
“The Vortex VR-6511S8 is designed for the most demanding I/O intensive embedded military systems,” said David Dietz, vice president and general manager of Curtiss Wright Controls Electronic Systems. “This board’s compact design and the connectivity to solid state drives provides a COTS multi-channel data recorder system can easily and quickly deployed in harsh environments.”All Curtiss-Wright Controls’ Vortex storage systems are specially designed to support demanding military applications, including mission, SIGINT/ELINT, and instrumentation recording in both laboratory and field environments.
The on-board Xilinx® Virtex®-5 SX95T FPGA supplies eight high-speed serial links to the VXS P0 connector and allows for 512MB of local SDRAM. These high speed serial links can be utilized by to eight SATA controllers, connected one disk per P0 high-speed serial link. The SATA controllers can be striped together to provide a reliable high-speed storage system. The Vortex VR-6511S8 is designed to pair with Curtiss-Wright Controls' VXS-4SSD VXS SATA Disk Carriers, which offers 4 SATA drives per 6U slot. The recording system can support up to 4 TB in 3 VXS slots using rotating drives or up to 2 TB in 3 VXS slots using solid state drives.
For system expansion, the Vortex VR-6511S8 provides two PMC/XMC mezzanine sites that support a large array of I/O such as 10GbE, sFPDP, analog I/O, and Gigabit Ethernet.
Vortex Software
The Vortex VR-6511S8 is packaged with comprehensive software that allows controllers to manipulate or analyze data while recording or during playback. The board’s XMLRPC API gives complete control of the system to the customer’s application, including the number of channels to acquire, disk grouping, disk group management, and playback from offsets in the recording. The Customer Programmable Recorder software application grants full access to a clearly defined and fully documented interface to the data before it is read from or written to the disk. The control API Data can initiate copying external storage on a per file basis.
Vortex VR-6511S8 Features:
- Embedded storage using 6U VXS Quad 2.5” SATA solid state or rotating hard disk drive storage
- Reliable Compact Data Recorder with up to 2TB with SSD and up to 4TB with HDD
- High-speed off-load to commercial Storage Area Networks (SANs)
- VXS (VITA 41) recording and playback system
