Curtiss Wright Controls Electronic Systems Debuts 5th Generation Single-Slot Physical Layer Switch

Click to view hi-res version in new windowDAYTON, OH – June 14, 2010 -- Curtiss Wright Controls Electronic Systems, a group of Curtiss-Wright Controls and the creator of the Physical Layer Switch (PLS) - has announced its new SLX4000 non-blocking, multi-protocol Physical Layer Swich is now ready and available. The SLX4000 is a “5th Generation” Layer 1 PLS delivered in a compact rack-mountable 1.5U single-slot package. Users control its network configurations with an adaptable and expandable crossbar switch performance, for reduced set-up time and limited network errors at a lower cost. The Curtiss Wright Controls Electronic Systems’ SLX4000 is designed for quick and easy integration of high performance switching in industrial, aerospace, and defense, applications. The SLX4000 is able to connect any serial digital signal input, up to 10 Gb/s, to any single output.

“Curtiss-Wright Controls' SLX4000 delivers optimal switching capability, unmatched signal integrity, and program flexibility from development to deployment,” said David Dietz, vice president and general manager of Curtiss Wright Controls Electronic Systems.

Because the SLX4000 passes the protocol or structure of data unaltered through the switch, the new PLS is compatible with a wide variety of signals and networks.

Users can configure the SLX4000 by employing one of CWCEL’s family of GLX/SLX port cards, which supports 48 (12 if 10 Gbps) channels of I/O. Port cards are available to meet an array of serial data transmission needs: 1, 2, 4, and 8 and 4 Gb/s Fibre Channel, 10/100/1000 Ethernet, Serial FPDP, 10 Gb/s Ethernet, and many other serial digital signals.

The SLX4000 switch is equipped with hot-swappable power supplies, SFPs, and a port card, allowing the users to swiftly add or replace parts without harming system up-time. A Compact Flash module serves as the switch's disk drive for the CPU and may be removed for security reasons.

Key Advantages of the SLX4000 PLS Approach

  • The SLX4000 supports flexible media conversion, allowing copper media input to be output using optical media. 850 nm optical can be easily changed to 1550 nm optical for DWDM applications.

  • When connected to the SLX4000, expensive resources such as sniffers, network analyzers, and data recorders can be shared across users and departments, significantly reducing costs.

  • The SLX4000 supports automated testing to considerably reduce network errors. The user can remotely change topologies and emulate optical power loss or cable breaks using a password protected connection via Ethernet (or RS-232). Scripts may be written in TCL, PERL, or other popular languages using the simple but powerful CLI.

  • A PLS also offers the ability to “wire once”. After connecting all network devices under test, all topology changes or fault tests can be simply applied using the switch via the GUI and CLI. This advantage significantly reduces system configuration time costs.

SLX4000 Physical Layer Switch Features:

  • Non-blocking, any input port to any output port(s)
  • Web-based Graphical User Interface (GUI) and Command Line Interface (CLI)
  • Hot swappable power supplies, port cards, and transceivers
  • Supports unlimited GUI and CLI (Telnet or SSH) sessions
  • Alias names for each port and for groups of ports
  • Point-to-point (full or half duplex), and loop (with auto loop feature), multicast (1 to many) topologies
  • Media conversion copper-to-optical
  • Multi-protocol, multi-rate support

SLX4000 Web-based GUI
The SLX4000 web-based GUI software simplifies configuration management. Log on to web-based GUI via your Internet browser to access the switch. Configurations can be saved and restored as you work. The web-based GUI also provides the user with real-time monitoring of the unit’s port cards and chassis.
